Se

Extroverted Sensing

Extroverted Sensing (Se) is about pure, unfiltered raw data from the environment. Se users live in the "here and now." They are highly attuned to aesthetics, physical sensations, and kinetic energy. They learn by doing and often have quick reflexes, both physical and verbal.

ActionObservationSpontaneityBoldnessConcreteness

At Best (Healthy)

Vibrant, engaging, and highly skilled at navigating physical reality. They help others enjoy life and take action.

Under Stress (Unhealthy)

Can be reckless, hedonistic, and impulsive. They may chase sensory pleasure to avoid internal emptiness or consequences.

Se and Ni share the same perceiving axis. Se lives in the present: what you see, hear and feel right now, and how to respond to it quickly and accurately. Ni looks past the present toward meaning and direction, and will let go of details to see the bigger picture. Se-dominant types tend to struggle with long-range planning and worries about the future, while Ni-dominant types tend to forget the body and the moment.

How to develop Se

1

Take up a physical activity that demands quick reactions - a ball game, dance, martial arts - where there is no time to think ahead.

2

When your mind is racing, stop and name five things you see, four you hear and three you can feel by touch.

3

Cook or build something by hand with no recipe or plan, adjusting as you go to what actually happens.

4

In conversation, pay attention to tone, expressions and body language, not just words, and notice what they say that the words do not.

Dominant Function

The primary lens through which they see the world.

ESTPs and ESFPs are the doers. They are often charismatic, stylish, and the life of the party, demanding to impact the physical world.

Auxiliary Function

Supports the dominant function and provides balance.

ISTPs and ISFPs use Se to execute their internal frameworks creatively. Examples include painting, mechanics, or sports - mastery of the physical tool.

Tertiary Function

Playful, but can turn childish or defensive under stress.

ENTJs and ENFJs use Se to relax and enjoy the finer things in life - good food, travel, and aesthetics. It helps them ground their grand visions.

Inferior Function

The source of many struggles, and of great growth.

INTJs and INFJs can feel overwhelmed by too much sensory input or chaos. Under stress, they might binge (eat/drink) or obsess over cleaning.
